Intent
At Kingsbury Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. The teaching should enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

IMPLEMENTATION
MFL FRENCH is taught in KS2 only.
Lessons are taught as units following the Salut program.
Work is structured to cover a range of vocabulary. Knowledge organisers are being provided with topic vocabulary to help children consolidate and recall.
Lesson plans can be printed to support non specialist teachers with ideas for tackling the attainment targets.
Each unit is a stand alone topic, so progression is not based on prior learning of key vocabulary. The identification of cognates and spelling patterns is ongoing, as is the use of basic French greetings,
The Salut! program has both Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 blocks of work, so this works well in our phases. Units are taught in a rolling programme over 2 years.
Each task supporting a lesson has a challenge element for those children who are working above expected levels and for those who wish to challenge themselves.
An introductory lesson should be taught with regular smaller reinforcement tasks to follow.
‘Singing French’ (book), alongside other printable resources, may be used to vary and extend the children’s learning.
